AFL Europe – Champions League

19th March – Amsterdam

Squad:

P. Boscart (c), C. Bouchet, J. Dagois, M. Cowan, S. Trollope, S. Saare, T. Stanley, F. Daniel, W. Leysen, B. Germond, A. Unsworth, H. Ryan, D. Blechynden, C. Dony, Y. Barbaria, S. Ryan Cloudy and chilly conditions greeted the Cocks at the 2nd AFL Europe Champions League.  The Cocks had been assigned to the orange pool (1 of 4 pools – 13 teams in total) along with reigning champions the West London Wildcats and the Odense Lions.  2 pool games would finalize the pool standings where 1st place clubs would continue to play for competition Champions whilst the 2nd and 3rd place sides would continue to play for 5th and 9th places respectively.

The cocks were able to catch the first half of the Wildcats vs Lions pool game at 11am before proceeding to warm up before the first 12am game vs Wildcats.  What was seen was an extremely competitive Odense side out to match it with clearly the best side in the competition.

12h00 vs West London Wildcats – Field 3

Boscart opened well in the ruck and combining with Bouchet and Trollope the cocks were able to get a major score on the board.  Wildcats were very quick to counter though.  Although the clearance out of the center was an even affair it was the pace of the transition play that had the Cocks reeling.  The wildcats were able to find lose options on the transition and then intelligently dispose unhindered into their attacking half.  Although defense managed to effect the lead out onto an angle the kicking skills of the Londoners meant that they capitalized on these opportunities.  The cockerels were not without their own though. Scallop managed to get on the end of a center clearance only to have his kick touched by a player in front on its way through the big sticks.  An agonising miss for the Cocks coach.  The defensive zone set by the Wildcats didn’t really concern Hugh (Fedex) Ryan, finding the Marking options from the kickouts, but still it was the transition that continued to break apart the Paris pressure game and provide open options in their forward line.  In the end, a class act by Nathan Costleys men who were an impressively well drilled and skilled group.  Meanwhile Paris will take home the fact that they were the lowest losing margin to the Wildcats for the tournament with just a 17 point deficit.

West London Wildcats 39 vs Paris Cockerels 22

12h30 vs Odense Lions – Field 1

A date directly after the Wildcats game was to characterize the draw for the Cockerels all day with two runs of consecutive games played throughout the tournament.  The synthetic pitch was always going to promote lightening quick games and bring out the highest skill level.

The game seesawed early with the midfield once again putting in mountains of work. The clearances of Dagois in the middle were becoming a clear trait of the team.  Meanwhile Trolley was picking up Mikkel Kjoge from the Odense Lions, a key player for them and VFL recruit.  Combining with Magic Mike they were instrumental in keeping the damage done by this threat down to a minimum.

The back line was also getting a good work out and Huw Ryan was the cork in the bottle cleaning up beautifully in defense.  Just as Odense seemed to be getting some momentum a crunching tackle by Scallop in front of goal kept the Lions in check.  Saare came into the ruck which enabled Boscart to play down forward.  A change which bought immediate dividends on the scoreboard.  Odense were able to hit back late in the game and plug the ball down their attacking end. Trolley received a dubious deliberate out of bounds call in the pocket which set Odense up for a shot on goal.  There was not enough time for Odense though and the Paris Cocks got through by 7 points.

15h30 vs Sodermalm – Field 1

The Cocks got off to an early break vs the Swedes but they were not letting the Parisians get away.  Once again the Paris midfield was doing a great job with Saare and Stanley changing in the ruck.  The defence were seeing their part of the action too with Hugh Ryan breaking tackles to clear the ball out and dispose with precision to Boscart in the forward line.  His work rate down in defence was a key part of the Paris transition.  Meanwhile Bouchet was racking up midfield clearances with Magic Mike also formidable.

Paris were able to kick away from Sodermalm who were playing their 4th game of the day (3 pool matches for them).  In the end the scoreboard probably didn’t do the Swedes justice who were a very competitive team.

16h00 vs Amsterdam Devils – Field 2

A date with destiny awaited for the cocks with a heated contest vs Amsterdam for the 5th place position. The midfield group was doing a great job early in the 4th game with no break once again between games.  Coach scallop was caught in a tackle and had to come off with a knee injury.  Meanwhile Cowan was seeing stars from some bone crunching football.  The cocks managed to kick out into the lead but an unfortunate altercation close to half time ended up in a Paris player being sent off on a yellow card.  A tough penalty to take, being one man down with this competition.  The half time siren sounded and the Cocks still had their noses in front.

The wheels were starting to fall off early in the second half.  Franky Daniels had to see the bench due to a leg injury and Blechy had sustained a leg corky which was limiting his effectiveness.  In the desperation we saw some critical mistakes in decision making and the Devils made us pay.  Trolley had to move back into defence and was pivotal when Fedex subbed off.  Unsworth moved into the midfield and was finding space whilst showing some signs of life in the side.  He was unfortunate not to get on the end of a pair of hands out in front of goal.  Dagois was also pushing to the last minutes of the game.  Paris had to capitilise on all opportunities and unfortunately this did not happen.  The Devils were able to finish strongly and take another victory from the Parisians.

Amsterdam Devils 43 vs Paris Cockerels 25

It was a really strong showing from the Cockerels side who I thought really took it to some of the best players in Europe.  The side will be disappointed in how things finished and should be keen to cause an upset next year should they be invited back to the tournament.  This will be a key question as the club divides back into the two teams playing in the National Competition.  A lot of work remains to be done.  Can one of the clubs teams go for victory in the National CNFA Competition this year?  Congratulations to all the players that represented their club and thanks again for the wonderful volunteers helping out on the sidelines.  The support of these volunteers was instrumental throughout the day.

Best: Bouchet, Boscart, Trollope, Dagois, H. Ryan, Cowan, Saare

Ending up in first place in the Orange group by beating the Paris Cockerels and the Odense Lions, the Wildcats went into the semis to face off with the South Dublin Swans. The Wildcats gave a strong performance and went into the Grand Final with a 69 point win under their belts. Coming up against their northern competition, the AFLCNE victors, the Wildcats showed no mercy and took out the title by a comfortable 30 points. Team of the Tournament Guernsey went to Lloyd Williams. We want to thank the Amsterdam Devils immensely for all their hard work, energy and time, without you guys this event wouldn’t have gone off as perfectly as it did! A big thank you to all the teams that came out, gave it their best and played hard. The level of football seen on the weekend was incredible and we couldn’t pick the top 8 let alone top 4. We’d also like to thank our volunteers, the umpires and the supporters that made the day wonderful! Until next year!
