COCKS PUT UP A FIGHT

Tournament report by Karl ROBSON The Paris Cocks including a number of Cockerelles made their way to Belfast to participate, for the first time, in the Leprechaun Cup organised by the Australian Rules Football League Ireland (ARFLI). The tournament represented the best chance for the Cocks to show their wares on a continental level having not qualified for the Champion’s League this season. The tournament was hosted by the Belfast Redbacks at the pristine Woodlands playing fields and, after a day of sightseeing on Friday, the Cocks were ready to go. The day didn’t get off to a good start for the Cocks, discovering that the tournament is run with 12 or 14 players on the field rather than the 9 the team was used to. This problem was exaggerated by the injury to Julien DAGOIS (knee) who instead took the coaches board and forces Karl ROBSON and Babacar SALL (dislocated fingers) who had both been injured in the weeks leading in to the match to pull on their gear. Fortunately we were leant players throughout the day by the other teams present as well as recruiting Wandsworth Demons women’s coach Mitch SKELLY when his team wasn’t playing at the same time as well as playing all our matches with 9 on the field. Playing matches throughout the day against the South Dublin Swans, Belfast Redbacks, South London Swans and UCC Bombers (Cork) the Cocks gave their best in trying circumstances but struggled to get the wins on the board to make the finals, unfortunately falling short on the day. A great cultural experience for the club to spend a number of days (and nights) together as a team alongside the Cockerelles. Thanks to everyone who put the event together and to all the players who found themselves pulling on a jersey for us on the day. Go Cocks! Karl   The Paris Cocks were a little short of numbers so two loan players rotated through the team throughout the tournament. The Cockerelles participated with players from the Glasgow Sharks
